Four UCLA Chemistry & Biochemistry graduate students have received highly competitive 2017 NSF Graduate Research Fellowship Program awards.
In addition, two current graduate students and three alumni received NSF Honorable Mentions.
Graduate students David Boyer (Eisenberg group), Emily Cosco (Sletten Group), Jacob Dander (Garg Group), and Ethan Rosser (Radu/Jung Group) were awarded a 2017 NSF Graduate Research Fellowships (GRFP).
Honorable Mentions by NSF, also a significant national academic achievement, were accorded to department scholar Luke Batty (Koehler Group) and graduate student Mary Waddington (Spokoyny Group).

Three alumni also received Honorable Mentions; Phillip Nguyen, B.S. ’16, now at Cornell; Elamar Hakim Moully, B.S./M.S. ’16, now at Northwestern University; and Hang Yin Karen Wong, B.S. ’16, now a graduate student at the University of California, San Francisco.
This year the NSF awarded 2,000 GRFP fellowships from 13,000 applicants. "This unique program has nurtured economic innovation and leadership in the U.S. continuously since 1952 -- by recruiting and supporting outstanding students with high potential in science, technology, engineering and mathematics very early in their graduate training," said Jim Lewis, NSF acting assistant director for Education and Human Resources. "These talented individuals have gone on to make important discoveries, win Nobel Prizes, train many generations of American scientists and engineers and create inventions that improve our lives."
The Graduate Research Fellowship Program is a part of the NSF’s efforts to foster and promote excellence in U.S. science, technology, engineering and mathematics by recognizing talent broadly from across the country.
